Gym Rules:
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated in Japan which later migrated to Brazil. Then the Gracie family made it to where a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat the opponent.
How does my child get promoted to a new belt?
We will have belt promotions every quarter (March, June, September, and December). Within a three-month period, your child would need to get a minimum of 15 classes for a stripe and 20 for a new belt. Each belt would need to get 4 stripes before moving into the next belt color. As the belt gets darker, the promotions would increase in difficulty. Not only are we looking at attendance but also on their behavior (in and outside the academy), school grades, and their retention of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
What happens if my child is misbehaving?
The worst thing you can do is take your child out of Jiu-Jitsu. Let the instructor know and he will take the appropriate measurements to help correct the child behavior. Remember it takes a village to raise a kid.
What if my child doesn’t want to go back to Jiu-Jitsu?
Remember your child 1st day of class and how he/she were excited? As a parent you need to stick to your guns and keep bringing your child to class. Let the instructor know what’s the reason for them wanting to quit. Are they not having fun? Are they always losing in matches? Is someone picking on them during class? Are they not being challenged? We as a family need to figure out what and why this is happening. If nothing has changed within a few weeks, the least you can do is let them finish their membership so that they know that we just don’t quit.
My child is crying during class, what can I do?
1st we need to figure out why is your child crying. If your child is crying because they lost a game or a match, the instructor will go over and talk to them. We need to teach your child that we don’t always win and that we never lose in a match, we learn.
If your child is hurt because they accidentally got hit, let the instructor handle it. We need to teach them how to be independent and know that pain is temporary, and it will eventually go away. If further assistance is needed, the instructor will send your child over.
My child is getting bullied in school. What should I do?
Always let the instructor know if they are getting picked on or teased. In class we will go over the three T’s with bully prevention. Talk, Tell, and Tackle. What Jiu-Jitsu is going to give your child is the confidence to stand up for them selves because they will know how to handle themselves if a bully lays a hand on them. Most of the time the bully will stop picking on your child just on the fact that they stood up for themselves and will sense that they are not an easy target. If talking to the bully doesn’t work out then your child should tell an adult and hopefully that situation is resolve. If the talk and tell doesn’t resolve the issue, then the next step would be to defend themselves and they need to take action. Now is your child going to get suspend? Most likely but at least the bully will learn his/her lesson and your child won’t be a target anymore.
